In designing the new accommodation situated amongst Gwinganna’s fruit orchard, significant thought went into designing buildings that would fit into the natural surrounding and that would be aesthetically Australian.
We chose a pallet of natural materials which when combined with traditional and older building techniques delivered accommodation enhancing the experience of the guests that stay within them. We were influenced by the existing Queenslander style surrounding the property and juxtaposed this with recycled Australian hardwoods reclaimed from various buildings and bridges throughout Australia. The timber itself bought with it a story and a legacy of times gone by. The warm reds of the Karri and ironbark timber were set against the cold grey blues of the reclaimed bluestone that holds within it much of our heritage and past. Stories of the old wool store building in Fremantle WA, the piers of the bridges at Brett’s Wharf in Brisbane (where much of the timber came from) or the convict ships that first traveled to Australia with the bluestone forming part of the ballast. “The aptly named Valencia, Mulberry, Olive, Macadamia & Lychee Orchard Suites mould into the natural surroundings with birds & wildlife providing an ever-changing sculpture.” Design Team: Pouné Parsanejad Date of completion: 2006 Location: Tallebudgera Valley, Queensland Builder: Peter Phillips Construction Photographer: Paul Broben |
